In the subject you asked us to give it a go and send you results on the PPA you had put together.  Here's some results I just posted in the Ubuntu Karmic forum Re: Radeon KMS.  On the limited work I've done it seems to run with no more than the typical A3 bugs, but on video graphics you can really feel the difference:
