In urxvt (rxvt-unicode in Debian), the foreground of fonts with background is not visible if xcompmgr is active (presumably because urxvt uses the RENDER extension). Easily reproducible by executing:

echo -e "\033[41mhi\033[mhi"

For the first "hi", only the red background will be shown.

This is on

Linux darc 2.6.27 #3 SMP PREEMPT Tue Dec 23 12:12:22 CET 2008 x86_64 GNU/Linux

with

This issue has been fixed for a while. It's working correctly with linux-nouveau version 2.6.32-00983-g4b52473, as well as more recently 2.6.34-rc2-00742-ga2b2091, and may have been working even before that.
