I hope I'm not wasting developers time with this.

I am seeing exactly the same symptoms as Octavian describes above. We seem to have very similar setups so this is more or less just a repetition.

Description.
After re-boot kdm login manager comes up and permits login but KDE freezes some
minute(s) later. If I log into a failsafe X session, Fluxbox or Xfce the freeze
occurs but it takes a little longer.
I can ssh into the box which is responsive but the X session can not be shut
down and the screen is completely frozen.
With the latest 2.6.31-rc5-git3 kernel the system is very sluggish after the
freeze when I ssh into it.

System environment:
--chipset
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82865G Integrated
Graphics Controller (rev 02)

--system architecture: 32 bit (i686)
Linux moron 2.6.30-gentoo-r4 #2 Sat Aug 8 12:48:27 GMT 2009 i686 Intel(R)
Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.80GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux

-- xf86-video-intel: x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel-2.8.0
-- xserver: x11-base/xorg-server-1.6.3
-- xorg: x11-base/xorg-x11-7.4
-- mesa: media-libs/mesa-7.5-r2
-- libdrm: x11-libs/libdrm-2.4.12
-- kernel: 2.6.30-gentoo-r4 (aslo tried more recent 2.6.31-rc5-git3 with worse results)
-- Linux distribution: Gentoo (unstable)
-- Machine or mobo model: Dell OptiPlex GX270
-- Display connector: VGA

Reproducing steps:
Reboot. Log into KDE, Xfce, fluxbox or failsafe X => Xorg freeze

Additional info:

I have tried various combinations of the above.
The last stable Xorg/driver/kernel combination for me was xorg-server: 1.5.3-r5 /
xf86-video-intel: 2.6.3-r1 / gentoo-kernel: 2.6.27-r10 (if I recall correctly)
x11-libs/libxcb-1.1

After building the xorg-server-9999 (git) with debugging enabled I tried to upgrade to the git version of the intel driver but the build failed and now I have a mess of failed dependencies so unfortunately I can not attach any meaningful log files at the moment.
Except maybe this from /var/log/messages

not immediately before freeze.

Just a me too. I have a similar sounding problem with an 865 chip with kernels 2.6.29/2.6.30 and xf86-video-intel-2.8.0. For me, using gnome, the system runs ok for a random length time interval before freezing. The cursor still moves, but otherwise X seems dead. I can ssh into it but the machine is very unstable after the X hang. There's doesn't seem to have ever been anything useful in Xorg.0.log.

This is on a machine I need to be stable so I've reverted to old versions.
