Forwarding this bug from Ubuntu reporter Jamal Fanaian:
http://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-ati/+bug/416001

[Problem]
Notification dialogs are showing white lines (see screenshots)

[Original Description]
Ubuntu release: Karmic 9.10
xserver-xorg-video-ati version installed: 1:6.12.99+git20090629.f39cafc5-0ubuntu6

After updating last night, notification dialogs are showing up corrupted (white with lines around it). The same is happening for other dialogs such as the brightness level notice that is displayed when the laptop is unplugged. Gnome-do also appears the same way.

Also, when logging in the entire screen will go white with lines for a few seconds and then go back to showing the orange background from the login screen.

I have attached some screenshots of the issue.

please try with the latest git from master. make sure you have:

A Ubuntu package of 794ae743 can be found in this PPA for testing:

https://edge.launchpad.net/~xorg-edgers/+archive/ppa
 + xserver-xorg-video-ati - 1:6.12.99+git20090902.794ae743-0ubuntu0tormod

Comment 4 Jamal Fanaian 2009-09-27 08:16:05 UTC
I installed revision 794ae743 but still experience the same issues.

Something I would like to note, is that it works if I turn on compositing (through compiz). The only problem, is that there are worse issues when I do this. For example, windows do not update until I mouse over them (or even show up). Parts of windows will not change. For example, if I click on a different tab in a window the content will be the same, until I try to mouse over the content. I will try to provide a few screenshots of this happening.

Is it known which X related packages were upgraded to cause the problem, and what versions/snapshots they were upgraded from/to?

I believe the problem is due to the xserver-xorg-video-ati. AFAIK I am running the radeon drivers. They stopped working when I upgraded to Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic).

The version in Jaunty (last one that worked) was:
1:6.12.1-0ubuntu2

The version in stock Karmic (the first one that showed the issue for me) was:
1:6.12.99+git20090825.fc74e119-0ubuntu2

The current version running on my system is:
1:6.12.99+git20090926.7968e1fb-0ubuntu0tormod

I'm not sure where the issue started happening or even if it is the ati drivers (Karmic switched a lot of video related things that I don't completely understand). Please let me know if there is any more information that I can provide to help solve the problem.

Thanks for your time and effort so far.

Does

    Option "AccelMethod" "EXA"

fix the problem?

Ah, that did fix the problem. So it is related to the switch of AccelMethod in Karmic. Well, I guess I'll stick to EXA for now.

Should I file a bug report about this, or is this issue related to my video card? If so, is that a Xserver or Ubuntu issue?

Thanks!

Yeah, I wouldn't hold my breath for the XAA issue to be fixed.

The default acceleration method is determined by the driver. However, this is tricky - the default was first changed from XAA to EXA for all cards, but then back to XAA for cards such as yours with little video RAM, due to complaints about bad performance with EXA. Hopefully that can be fixed once and for all at some point with KMS, but in the meantime I'm afraid we just can't get the default right for everybody.

I have a similar problem with my old laptop and the r100 driver.
It works fine with compiz, but without some programs show these straight lines on some (not all) applications (the notifier area being the most important).

Where do I put the above mentioned option? There is no xorg.conf anymore (at least I can't find any).
