With the following setup:
gabble 0.9
MC 5.3.1
telepathy-glib 0.7.37

For example, contact with valid handle of 4 is one that is offline...

Calling subject method and passing a uint array containing 4 will result the following message:

org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply: Message did not receive a reply (timeout by message bus)

And, gabble crashes and restarts

Which exact Gabble version are you using? I believe this may have been fixed in 0.9.2, by commit 55665fa26 "Survive GetContactCaps when we don't have presence". Could you try with a current version, please?

I believe this has been fixed since 0.9.2. If it doesn't work for you with a later version, please reopen this bug.
