Sorry my computer rebooted and I could not add more details. The problem with glxgears manifests itself when connecting (with X-forwarding enabled) to a remove host (particularly to a cluster running CentOS 6.8). Glxgears works locally with version 2.7.10 but it does not work remotely, albeit other XWindows functions do work (xclock, xterm, etc.). 

Downgrading to 2.7.8 fixes the problem.

Any idea how to fix this?
