xorg logfile shows 1024x768 mode selected but only lower res work on monitor

This worked fine with xorg 7.2. Since upgrade to 7.3 (latest versions) the monitor reports "Input not supported". Tried with another make of monitor,
and this one gives a black screen for 1024x768, lower res work OK.

Tried all the different 1024 mode lines I could find - none give screen on monitor. I even took the exact same modeline from my 7.2 system and forced
it in the config - no good.

Resolutions 832 and lower mostly work OK. Bit fuzzy though since 1024 is the
monitors native resolution.

I am a software developer - any tips on how to diagnose the problem ?
Bit stuck - the VESA driver bombs with a "SetVBEMode" failure.

This system is a fresh install of Fedora Core 9, with xorg packages upgraded to the latest release.

Build ID: xorg-x11-server

(II) Module mga: vendor="X.Org Foundation"
compiled for, module version = 1.4.9
