However, xpdf, kpdf and acrobat open these documents without any delay."

Confirmed, CairoOutputDev in 0.10.1 takes ages more to render it and when done it's missing the watermark of the background

Both documents render quite fast with current poppler and watermark is rendered correctly too. Feel free to reopen if the problem persists for you with current poppler.
