This is likely a cairo-gl but I haven't investigated too much, so filing against weston for now.

When building weston with --with-cairo=glesv2, weston-terminal is drawn just fine. However when building with --with-cairo=gl, weston-terminal is drawn all black (see screenshot). It still works fine but you can't see what you're typing...

Tested with cairo from git master (98fef3) and cairo 1.12.6. This seems unrelated to the font corruption issue (bug #70435) as reverting 1e3424 in cairo doesn't help (and vanilla 1.12.6 should have been fine).

This happens with weston master and with latest 1.3.

The flower client works just fine.

I'm using cairo 1.13.1 here and can't reproduce the problem.  If it's still there please reopen and reassign to the cairo component.
