Description Max 2014-03-31 05:57:25 UTC
I have been using 2 monitors (1080p), and I've just replaced one with a 1600p monitor, and straight away I am getting frequent lock ups (several times a day), with this in the error log:

(EE) [mi] EQ overflowing. Additional events will be discarded until existing events are processed.

Generally when a lot of stuff is happening on the screen (ie. videos, etc).
Comment 1 Ilia Mirkin 2014-03-31 11:47:51 UTC
Can you provide your full dmesg after this happens? (This should provide information about your hw, as well as see what errors are coming up there as the X stuff goes bad.)

Comment 3 Ilia Mirkin 2014-04-01 02:51:25 UTC
It's more common to attach logs... otherwise the bug reports become very unwieldy to read.

[ 1743.737807] nouveau ![ PFIFO][0000:01:00.0] unhandled status 0x00800000
[ 8543.865800] nouveau E[ DRM] GPU lockup - switching to software fbcon
[ 8558.870800] nouveau E[ X[808]] failed to idle channel 0xcccc0001 [X[808]]

The unhandled PFIFO bit comes _way_ earlier than the gpu lockup... so probably unrelated.

The fact that X segfaults when the GPU locks up is a little unfortunate, but right now this situation is completely unhandled by the userspace stack in any case. Ideally the GPU wouldn't lock up :)

A quick and easy thing to try is blob pgraph firmware instead of nouveau's. Take a look at http://nouveau.freedesktop.org/wiki/VideoAcceleration/#firmware for a quick and easy way to get it (yes, I know it says it's for hw video decoding accel, but the script extracts all fw). Follow those instructions and add

nouveau.config=NvGrUseFw=1

to the kernel command line (or when loading the nouveau module); make sure that the firmware files are available when the nouveau module loads (so if it loads from your initrd, they need to be in your initrd).

The problem seems to have disappeared after I installed nvidia propriety drivers (from rpmfusion).

Hmmmmm.

Yes, the proprietary drivers tend to work reasonably well. If you're no longer interested in debugging the nouveau issues, I can close this issue.

If you do want to help identify/fix the issue in nouveau, please follow the steps I outlined, which should be a good start.
Comment 6 bjlockie 2014-04-04 03:34:31 UTC
I think it is the same as https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=62912

I think nouveau should work around it.

I also have two monitors and it crashes often.
Comment 7 Max 2014-04-06 23:29:00 UTC
I will put this on hold for the time being, as this is a work computer, unfortunately I don't have the luxury of time to test things much, especially if it stuffs everything up and I can't do work :(
Comment 8 jw.hendy 2014-04-12 01:06:26 UTC
@Max: can you confirm that this was only an issue due to two minotors? I'm trying to decide if my similar issue is a replicate or if not since I'm simply on a laptop here, no additional monitor issue.

@Ilia: I was experiencing similar issues (GPU Lockup, switching to fbcon in dmesg) and system failure on `startx` back in Oct 2013. Here's an example log after issuing `startx`:

I'm on Arch Linux and tried nouveau + the AUR nouveau-fw package (basically a packaged version of nouveau's VideoAcceleration instructions), but was still getting issues. Here's two dmesg outputs:

I have been getting overheating cores and failure to suspend on lid close lately, which prompted me to see about returning to nouveau and I found this post. Your suggestion of:

nouveau.config=NvGrUseFw=1

Seems to have worked! I need to reboot once more to verify, as I'm on linux-lts kernel (3.10.36) at the moment, but this was the first time I was able to `startx` with nouveau and did not see the GPU lockup message in dmesg.

I'm trying to understand why this kernel line is necessary. I haven't seen it at all before, either on the Arch Wiki or in the nouveau firmware instructions. In fact, in googling it, I find primarily hits on bug reports regarding GPU lockups! I'd think this would be more widespread in setup/debugging instructions.

Thanks for any feedback -- I'd like to get information from someone who knows and then update the Arch Wiki with this information in case it affects others.
Comment 9 jw.hendy 2014-04-12 01:34:17 UTC
I'm ashamed. I had a stale /etc/modprobe.d/nouveau.conf with noaccel=1 still set, which is why this worked for me. I, in fact, get the exact same gpu lockup with the firmware extracted in /usr/lib/nouveau and there has been no improvement since Oct 2013. I'm inclined to start my own bug report as I'm on a separet chipset. Sorry for the noise.
Comment 10 Samuel Pitoiset 2015-06-03 13:23:39 UTC
Can you reproduce this issue with a more recent kernel?
If you no longer have the problem, this issue should be closed.
Comment 11 Samuel Pitoiset 2015-06-14 12:03:40 UTC
Feel free to re-open the issue if the bug still occurs.
