Description rmbeer 2017-11-11 23:24:29 UTC
DISPLAY=:0.0 xrandr -s 1280x800
xrandr --display :0.0 -s 1280x800
xrandr -d :0.0 -s 1280x800

  And other variants can't change the screen resolution from other terminal, always saying this error:

Failed to change the screen configuration!

The X-Server needs to be active (you have to switch to its Virtual Terminal) to apply such configurations. If you want to do that from another VT, you could use a 'chvt'. i.e.
$ chvt 7; sleep 3; xrandr ...
(If 7 is the VT your X-Server runs on, the sleep might not be necessary.)
