Created attachment 143857 [details] journalctl_failed boot X server fails with modesetting error and blank screen without nomodeset [(EE) modeset(0): failed to set mode: Invalid argument]. GPU: Intel® HD Graphics 400 (Braswell) CPU: N3050 Screen 0 connected on eDP-1 Acer es1-131 notebook Tested versions from ubuntu disco dingo 5.0.0-8, stable 5.0.5/5.0.6,lts 4.19.33-4.19.25. Working only on 4.19.25 and lower. After reverting upstream commit d179b88deb3bf6fed4991a31fd6f0f2cad21fab5 (https://patchwork.freedesktop.org/patch/286290/) works without nomodeset parameter tested on 4.19.33-4.19.26/5.0.5/5.0.6/ubuntu 5.0.0-8. Attempted suggested fix from https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=109959 does fix the issue. Because I don't know what other information is required/feasable I'm able to test and provide necessary logs. Thanks for your great work! Sincerely yours newcomer, Rosen Papazov
@Manasi This issue duplicate is a duplicate of Bug 109959? @Rosen do you mean this patch fixes the issue? https://patchwork.freedesktop.org/series/58893/
Sorry for the confusion. I've tested with the attached patch from Bug 109959 (before patchwork post https://bugs.freedesktop.org/attachment.cgi?id=143817) and it did not resolve the problem on kernel 5.0.5 Currently compiling kernel 5.0.6 with https://patchwork.freedesktop.org/series/58893/ and separate build with https://patchwork.freedesktop.org/series/58975/ to test. Will update with results ~20:00 UTC. Do you need specific log/trace to be attached?

After testing both 5.0.5 ( https://patchwork.freedesktop.org/series/58893/ ) version of the patch and 5.0.6 ( https://bugs.freedesktop.org/attachment.cgi?id=143865 ) I can confirm that they do not fix the issue. Attached logs from last failed boot on 5.0.6
The problem persists on Fedora 30 beta ( kernel 5.0.5-300.fc30, 5.0.6-300.fc30 and 5.1.0-0.rc3.git3.1.fc31). Tested with the patch from Bug 109959. Only viable solution for now is reverting upstream commit d179b88deb3bf6fed4991a31fd6f0f2cad21fab5 (https://patchwork.freedesktop.org/patch/286290/).
