Camera capture of X after reconnecting monitor and running `xrandr --auto`

I have an HP Pavilion dv5000 model laptop with an integrated ATI Radeon Xpress 200m. It has a VGA output which I use to hook to my external LCD, a 19" LCD with a native resolution of 1440x900. My xorg.conf is configured well-enough to detect the resolution and stretch the screen accordingly instead of trying to force 1280x800 and looking all blocky. Picture taken from camera attached, screen capture is not possible.

Regardless, the above occurs when I do the following:
1. Turn on computer with external LCD connected, allow X to start, log in to any session.
2. Disconnect the external monitor, start a terminal.
3. `xrandr --auto` and the laptop monitor will get the correct resolution, 1280x800, no problem here.
4. Reconnect the external monitor and type `xrandr --auto`. The bottom of the screen is garbled, just like the picture attached.

Is this still an issue with kms or newer versions of the driver?

Mass closure: This bug has been untouched for more than six years, and is not
obviously still valid. Please reopen this bug or file a new report if you continue to experience issues with current releases.
