On boxes with intel cards, I can't get the WebGL samples to run using Firefox trunk nightlies.

Repro steps:
1. wget http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/nightly/latest-trunk/firefox-3.7a1pre.en-US.linux-x86_64.tar.bz2
2. unp firefox-3.7a1pre.en-US.linux-x86_64.tar.bz2
3. cd firefox
4. ./firefox
5. open about:config and type "webgl"
6. set "webgl.enabled_for_all_sites" to "true"
7. if firefox prints an error to the terminal saying it can't find mesa, you need to set "webgl.osmesalib" as well
8. restart firefox (not sure this is needed but why not)
9. open up the webgl sample page: http://people.mozilla.com/~vladimir/webgl/spore/sporeview.html

10. for intel machines (G45), I see this firefox error:

nsGLPbufferGLX: gActiveBuffers: 1
Canvas 3D: GLX_SGIX_pbuffer not supported

What is GLX_SGIX_pbuffer? Is it really necessary to have this in the driver to render WebGL? Is it hard to implement?

I think you pointed it at the wrong thing.  OSMesa is not the same thing as the regular 3D driver.  It's a special version of Mesa exclusively for off-screen (hence the OS) rendering.  Your distro may not have installed this for you.  On Debian it's libosmesa, and on Fedora 11 it's mesa-libOSMesa.  I don't know what it would be on other distros.

Yes, I was point to the main mesa .so file. My bad. However, if I install libosmesa6 and then set webgl.osmesalib to "/usr/lib/libOSMesa.so.6.5.3" (or any of the other .so files listed in "dpkg -L libosmesa6" I keep getting this error:

This is karmic so I got "7.6.0~git20090817.7c422387-0ubuntu5" installed. Did intel have support in this version?

OSMesa has nothing to do with any hardware driver.  It's an entirely software implementation.  I'm pretty sure it supports those GLX extensions, so I'm not sure what the problem is.  I'm re-assigning to mesa3d-dev because this is pretty much the limit of my OSMesa knowledge.  Sorry.

OSMesa doesn't have any GLX features/extensions.  It has a totally different interface.
I'm not familiar with WebGL either.  Hopefully you can debug this further on your own.

This is not a problem with were osmesa is pointing, I can confirm that for some reason on mesa 7.6 the GLX_SGIX_pbuffer extention is missing (and IIRC WAS present on mesa 7.5), in fact glxinfo shows NO GLX extensions...

possibly it would be a good idea to change the description of the bug to reflect the fact that it is releated to pbuffers being missing.

I tried it again now with version "7.6.0-1ubuntu4" of mesa and libosmesa. I also tried grabbing a fresh mozilla trunk build (25th oct) but I still could not get it to work on this intel G45 machine.

FWIW, GLX_SGIX_pbuffer is listed in glxinfo under "client extensions" but not under "server extensions". I've attached my glxinfo output for reference.

The issue literally seems to be that asking for a pbuffer means you get no fbconfigs at all... essentialy pbuffers just don't work.

pbuffers are now supported in xserver master, and will be in 1.9.  To get webgl running on intel, a patch for mozilla is needed:

but according to vlad, he may just switch to FBOs instead.  Either way, this is no longer a mesa bug, and I closing it.
