On an nforce1 based system nv driver only offers small modes via xrandr though attached monitor can do up to 1280x1024. It seems not to fetch EDID and just offer some standard modes.

xrandr:
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 240, current 800 x 600, maximum 800 x 600
default connected 800x600+0+0 0mm x 0mm
   800x600 60.0* 56.0
   640x480 60.0
   400x300 60.0 56.0
   320x240 60.0

System:
  Mainboard: MSI K7N420 Pro
  Xorg: 1.7.5
  xf86-video-nv: 2.1.16
Kernel: linux-2.6.33-rc8 (VGA console, no framebuffer module loaded)
Monitor: Iiyama E431S, 1280x1024, connected with VGA

Attached is concatenation of: lspci -vvv, /proc/ioports, /proc/iomem, Xorg.0.log, xorg.conf

Nobody is supporting xf86-video-nv and it will be going away at some point in the future. If your problem persists with nouveau or the proprietary driver provided by nVidia, please re-file accordingly. We apologize for the inconvenience.
