Created attachment 41185 [details] log file I'm running the git master. When I exit I'm left with whatever was last showing on the screen (instead of switching back to the terminal text mode). Remote logging in shows that everything has exited properly. This machine uses the ati driver (also the git master). I've attached a log file.
As you say this is a regression, what change(s) did you make to your system between the good and bad state? Does VT switching to console work while X is running? Is there anything indicating a problem during X shutdown in the X server stderr output? It should be captured in the gdm/kdm log file.
Note that I'm not running gdm or kdm; I expect to end up with a nongraphics screen. VT switching works. I first noticed the problem after updating to the commit in bug 32115, although the problem could have been from some other commit (X was pretty unusable until the bug was fixed). The last couple of lines of the console output are: waiting for X server to shut down gnome-settings-daemon: Fatal IO error 11 (Resource temporarily unavailable) on X server :0. xinit: unexpected signal 15. gnome-session: Fatal IO error 4 (Interrupted system call) on X server :0.

This should be fixed by: http://lists.x.org/archives/xorg-devel/2010-December/017250.html
The patch works, thanks, but it doesn't seem to have been committed to the git master branch.
Mass closure: This bug has been untouched for more than six years, and is not obviously still valid. Please reopen this bug or file a new report if you continue to experience issues with current releases.
