Using the newest available kernel 2.6.37-rc5 (2.6.37-6.99.7.0926a18) the X-server as currently provided hangs up as well but more entirely than with the 2.6.34/nomodeset configuration (Bug 32393) possibly for another reason though. Modesetting still does not work at a usable level as so far: The screen starts as here to blink between dark and enlightened black. After some minutes the X-Server finally gives up and exits (Xorg.0.log). Two times as though I succeeded to bring it up in spite of these problems once with the external screen staying dark and another time with both screens enabled. The luck didn`t last for long though as after issuing a startkde multiple X-Server errors occurred short after which the server hung itself fully up (as described at the beginning). Configuration and X-Server versions are the same as for Bug 32393. When the external screen does not come up it is recognized and shown to be initilized by xrandr however not displaying anything.

(In reply to comment #6) > colorful pixelsoup (integrated scr only) This log file shows the X driver using UMS while KMS is initialized in the kernel. Make sure the radeon kernel module is loaded and initialized before X starts. There are several issues here which will need to be tracked separately.
error was no more observed with newer versions of X / report is very old.
