Additional details may be found in the log. I assume for now, that this problem is caused by lack of support for Shader Model 3.0 in MESA. Please correct me, if I'm wrong. Thanks. The game needs ATI_draw_buffers. This extension is used by the NVIDIA Cg Toolkit, so we apparently should have it regardless of the fact how old it is. I was working with Cg a lot in the past and there was a good reason people used ATI_draw_buffers: ARB_draw_buffers hadn't worked on ATI drivers. BTW, ATI_draw_buffers has been supported by NVIDIA too. Bug 34321 needs to be fixed first though. Reassigning to Mesa core.

OpenGL does not allow for reliable detection of Shader Model 3 but it IS required because some of the shaders are too complex for Shader Model 2 hardware. As for ATI_draw_buffers it should not be required if ARB_draw_buffers is present. This is some kind of issue with Nvidia Cg library which tries to use it even though it's not present and in fact the library has detected this. Check the log in ~/.frozenbyte/trine/logs/log.txt, you should see ARB_draw_buffers mentioned. Implementing and advertising ATI_draw_buffers should allow the game to continue and the extensions are nearly identical in functionality.

I once tried this on Geforce FX-class hardware with Nvidia proprietary driver and it failed. This was quite a while ago so I don't remember what the exact error was. Might have been about too many temporaries. Or maybe the Nvidia driver was bullshitting me. The other reason for specifying SM3.0 was that the last driver available for GF FX did not support ARB_framebuffer_object which is necessary for this game. On ATI side they were dropping support for old hardware and mesa driver was not anywhere near ready. But if you can make Trine run on Shader Model 2.0 HW good for you :)

I can run this game Windows version via WINE. I need to enable GLSL in WINE otherwise the game does not render all the scene properly. But the game is laggy. The plus point of WINE is, it can skip functionality check. But I would love to play this game natively on Linux

This is the same as ARB_draw_buffers (which derived from it), except for s/ARB/ATI/. The glapi bits were already in place, and what was missing was just the ARB_fp part. The new Humble Bundle game "trine" tries to use this extension without checking that it's exposed, which this works around. If libtxc_dxtn.so is in the mesa directory (/usr/lib or /usr/local/lib for instance, it depends on your distro/install), then this is enabled (if your mesa have enabled libtxc_dxtn at compile time, but by default it's set). You can check with : $ glewinfo | grep s3tc But not all driver support s3tc, I know r300g and r600g (with kernel 2.6.39) do. But intel, nouveau, etc ? To get libtxc_dtxn, extra repository can sometimes provide it (eg. RPM Fusion). Else, you can download libtxc_dxtn.tar.gz, make, make insall it. It's easy.
Intel driver supports libtxc_dxtn-1.0.0 for a long time. Test result is like this: Shadowgrounds and Shadowgrounds Survivor both works beautifully. The game Amnesia The Dark Descent works except minor graphical bugs. The game Enemy Territory: Quake Wars works at High Setting at good speed without using shadow (using shadow is slower) I have not used Mesa 7.11-devel because it has some other major shader bugs right at the moment (Just try The game Enemy Territory: Quake Wars) Mesa 7.10.2 is pretty stable (Just like Mesa 7.8.3-rc1 and Mesa 7.7.1) and only have some minor bugs. (Just try Steel Storm Episode 1 and try different graphic settings) Trine is not working at the moment with Mesa 7.10.2 (patch applied to support ATI_draw_buffers)
Closing as this is fixed in cloned git as of today 19 April 2011.
