This occurs on a laptop: samsung 305V, with dual GPU.
00:01.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Device 9641
...
02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc NI Seymour [AMD Radeon HD 6470M]

I run linux 3.1rc10 mainline or from branch drm-next and firmware-linux-nonfree from debian (fetched from dwmw2's git). The same that I could find elsewhere, md5sum-wise.

modprobing radeon results in the display being powered off.

Xorg.log.0

I tried an xorg.conf specifiying only one GPU and one screen.

When using PCI ID 0:1:0 : no screens found.
When using PCI ID 2:0:0 : screen stays black. see attached log.
Comment 5 Alex Deucher 2011-10-20 06:53:03 UTC
This is a muxless system so only the integrated GPU is connected to the displays.

Xorg.log.0

In xorg.conf, I added a modeline and a preferred mode to the monitor section (inspired by edid info):

  # 1368x768 @ 70.00 Hz (GTF) hsync: 56.00 kHz; pclk: 101.70 MHz
  Modeline "1368x768_70.00" 101.70 1368 1448 1592 1816 768 769 772 800 -HSync +Vsync

And the following options in the device section:
Option "PanelSize" "1368x768"
Option "IgnoreLidStatus" "True"
Option "Enable" "True" # this one is from http://wiki.debian.org/XStrikeForce/HowToRandR12

Excerpt from attached log:
[ 34912.978] (II) RADEON(0): RandR 1.2 enabled, ignore the following RandR disabled message.
[ 34912.978] (WW) RADEON(0): Option "PanelSize" is not used

[ 34912.978] (WW) RADEON(0): Option "Enable" is not used
[ 34912.978] (WW) RADEON(0): Option "PreferredMode" is not used

Those options are for UMS only. They are not relevant for KMS. You log is from the discrete card which, as I said earlier, is not attached to any displays. You need to start X on the APU to use the displays. You probably is probably related to the DP bridge chips which are not always very reliable at the moment.
