Description Frank Griswold 2012-02-05 13:45:15 UTC
I have a user-type label form for creating 6 labels per page used for name-tag buttons. This is a 2.75 inch by 2.75 inch label with a half-inch gutter.

I create a new file using the new -> labels wizard:
 - associate a database
 - use 3 fields and some text
 - use an image as the background for the label: A png file with appropriate dimensions.
 - save as an odt file

At the step where the document has been created, I need to change the font size for several of the buttons where the first name is too long. I choose the "edit individual document" button. While viewing the merged labels, I can change the font size and layout for SOME of the labels, but after a few changes, (or perhaps once I reach far enough down in the document), the font-size menu grays out. I found that I could cut the text even so, but when I cut, saved to tmp, resized and attempted to paste back, I got a 'read only' error of some kind. At this point, though, I'm not even getting that: It simply quietly ignores me.

Initially, it appeared that I could edit any label up to some number, but now, I can apparently only edit any label that was already edited.

Thank you very much for your bug report!

However, this bug report has never been confirmed by someone else, therefore I have to reset its status to UNCONFIRMED. No offence! This is just how bug wrangling works ;-).

Label wizard creates a one page form letter, not a document. This form letter now can be changed (i.e. formatting or background graphics). This form letter may be saved for later use, i.e. changed data in database.
After that, you may print the form letter - it will be filled with the data from the data base you choose while creating the labels.

This worked perfectly on my Mac OS 10.6.8 with LO 3.6.2.

Only thing: In Forms wizard on tab "Options" have an eye on checkmark "synchronize contents". If this one is checked, only the first label can be changed, but all these changes keep place in all labels generated so it will be even easier to make some text fields bold on all labels or add a picture to the background. This will be done by the floating palette button "Synchronize labels" that will appear if this option was checked. Trying to change an other but the first label will silently fail.

Do not hesitate to reopen in case of mistriage.

Btw: Some kind of example document would ease the forthcomming of this.

Uwe has described how to make uniform labels.

What is needed is a way to reformat the *result* of expanding the label form with data from the database. The label has only so much room for the first and last names. The font size for first name is, say 20pt and say, 13pt for last name. When I use data "Uwe\tAltmann\tDE" it will work fine, but when I use data "Bartholomäus\tZimmermann\tDE" the font size makes the names too long to fit. After I "print" the form letter to a document, I need to be able to edit the document to change the font size for just a few of the names. Maybe I also need to make a few changes that are not font size: Color, weight, font?

Just retried witch about 400 addresses of my address book generating a hundred pages document. (using LO 3.6.2)
What is indeed strange is that regarding the last label (and only that) a double-click to mark a whole word doesn't work - a triple click marks the whole text , but a double-click does nothing.
This is imho caused by the background graphics - if it is deleted for that label, everything works like expected.

Could you please
1. look for an instance of dacument/label which behaves in sense of your bug report
2. delete (or better cut) background graphic
3. try if it works then
4. paste background graphic again

If step 3 works, you found n easy workaround. And besides this, we should change the subject of the bug report to something like "Editing text in front of background graphic in large documents don't work properly" or that like.
