PPS presentation causing crash

When the attached PPS presentation (containing sound and some visual effects)
is ended, by ESC key or "End presentation" in the context menu, Impress crashes
due to an "unexpected error" - see error message screenshot attached (German).

Error reproduction:
- Open the attached presentation (double-click in Win explorer) -->
Presentation starts
- Hit the ESC key or use the context menu to end the presentation --> Impress crashes with no error message, nothing in the Event Viewer.

Reproduced with LO 3.5.1 release on Win7 x64 SP1, LO 3.4.5 release on Win7 x32, and LO 3.4.5 release on WinXP x32.

This is not a duplicate of "Bug 45172 - Application crashes when a particular PPS presentation is ended" because there is no error message dialog.
Comment 1 Julien Nabet 2012-03-20 16:12:05 UTC
With pc Debian x86-64 on master (future 3.6 version) updated today, I reproduce the behaviour.
I noticed no error/warn messages in console.
I runned it on gdb, no sigv or something as if Esc just close pps + close LO without crash.

Other test :
- I copied the file
- modified the extension of the new one to ppt
- opened the new one
- viewed it as slideshow
- Esc key

Result : slideshow closed and LO was still opened with the file.

.PPS and .PPT extensions are associated with LO in Windows Explorer on my PCs. I copied preikestolen_en.pps to preikestolen_en.ppt, and I tested each one by double-clicked on the file within Windows Explorer.

With the .PPS file, LO starts in Slide Show mode when opening the file, and LO crashes when ending Slide Show mode.

With the .PPT file, LO does not start in Slide Show mode when opening the file. Instead, I press the F5 key to start Slide Show mode. When I end the Slide Show mode, LO remains open with the .PPT file.

I got the same results with LO 3.5.1 release on Win7 x64 SP1, LO 3.4.5 release on Win7 x32, and LO 3.4.5 release on WinXP x32.

Since confirmed by Julien Nabet, I changed the status from UNCONFIRMED to NEW.
Since reproduced on Windows and Linux platforms, change Platform to All.

I tested about 10 different .PPS files containing sound and pictures (some have effects too), and LO has the same behavior on all of them. Therefore, LO behavior is related to the .PPS file extension. It also appears that any .PPS file would produce this behavior, but it would be good for someone to test with a .PPS file that does not contain sound or pictures.

I also tested with a .PPTX file, which behaves in LO like the .PPT file. However, when I rename it to have a .PPSX extension, LO treats it like .PPTX and .PPT.

Since Julien Nabet did not find evidence of a crash, I considered that LO is designed intentionally to automatically present .PPS files as a slide show and automatically close LO when the slide show is ended. However, LO does not treat .PPSX files the same as .PPS.

The problem is either:
a) LO crashes or auto-closes .PPS files when the slide show is ended.
b) With .PPSX files, LO does not automatically start in Slide Show mode, nor does LO auto-close when the slide show is ended.

It would be helpful if someone who has Microsoft Office installed could report its behavior with .PPT, .PPS, .PPTX and .PPSX files on opening and when the slide show is ended.

Sorry about the duplicate comment.

After reading the following pages, I see that LO behavior with .PPS files is intentional:
http://en.libreofficeforum.org/node/390
http://www.presentationhelper.co.uk/Forum/powerpoint-questions-answers/1595-automatically-open-ppt-attachment-slideshow-mode.html

I changed the status to RESOLVED.
A separate bug report is needed for the handling of .PPSX files.
