Chart categories created in libreoffice 3.6.3 are lost in earlier versions of libreoffice

The problem consists of 2 parts. When copy charts from spreadsheets to text documents, numbered categories are appearing in date format in data table, but normally (as numbers) in chart. That would not be a big problem.

When text files with such charts (attached file) are opened in earlier versions of libreoffice, categories field in data table is empty. This is not happening with charts created in text file. It seems that all numeric values in categories in charts created in calc are lost in writer, when opened in earlier versions

When opened in 4.0 alpha, charts categories are appearing in data sheet in date format and appears normally in chart.

It is serious regression making incompatible 3.6 and further versions with earlier versions of libreoffice.

I do not understand the bug report, sample document tells me nothing

@andis.lazdins@gmail.com
unfortunately important information is missing.
May be hints on <http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/BugReport> will help you to find out what information will be useful to reproduce your problem?
Please:
- Write a meaningful Summary describing exactly what the problem is
- Attach a test kit with sample documenst (not only screenshot) or refer to
existing sample documents in an other Bug with a link. We need all source
  documents.
- Attach screenshots with comments if you believe that that might explain the
problem better than a text comment. Best way is to insert your screenshots
into a DRAW document and to add comments that explain what you want to show
(attachment 68877 [details], attachment 68490 [details])
- Contribute a document related step by step instruction containing every
key press and every mouse click how to reproduce your problem
(similar to example in Bug 43431)
– if possible contribute an instruction how to create a sample document
  from the scratch
- add information
  -- what EXACTLY is unexpected
-- and WHY do you believe it's unexpected (cite Help or Documentation!)
-- concerning your OS (Version, Distribution, Language)
-- concerning your LibO version (with Build ID if it's not a public release)
and localization (UI language, Locale setting)
–- Libo settings that might be related to your problems
(video hardware acceleration, Experimental features enabled, ...)
-- how you launch LibO and how you opened the sample document
–- Whether your problem persists when you renamed your user profile
before you launch LibO (please see
     <https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/UserProfile#User_profile_location>)
-- everything else crossing your mind after you read linked texts

Hi Andis,

Could you please attach your spreadsheet showing that problem?

Possibly duplicate to Bug 61805 or Bug 63025 or Bug 63017

Hello!

I decided not to update information on this bug because of very strange communication in previous comment.
I just found that the problem with disappearing categories persists also in 4.0.3. if the file provided in this bug report is opened in openoffice.org 2.4.2

I don't have original sample file anymore, but switching to date format works in all files. Example attached.

I can't confirm that, but I can confirm copying that chart to Writer/Impress produces same output.

Marking UNCONFIRMED -> let anyone take a look at issue with opening on earlier version (but I think only with earlier LO, not OOO)

My colleges complained about 3.5 version. I don't have any of them installed, because of this issue (broken backward compatibility).

There are several problems appeared in chart component starting with 3.6, like best fit for labels don't work anymore, or it has very strange implementation now. Probably these problems has the same roots.

both 3.5.x and 3.6.x releases reached their end of life.

all users are encouraged to switch to the new stable branch which is 4.0.x (actually 4.0.4 release available and 4.0.5 out in a couple of weeks).

apparently the issue only affects those users who still use very old release (the 3.5.x branch is obsolete) trying to open files created by recent releases: IMHO it should be a good reason to upgrade.

This bug is very hard to follow because it doesn't have exact reproducible steps. I am marking as NEEDINFO - if specific steps (detailed, telling us exactly what to do and where the problem is) we can try to reproduce. Please remember that we are a very small team handling thousands of bug reports, the more clear you are in reporting, the less time we have to spend guessing at how to accomplish what you're seeing.

Thanks for your understanding, once you provide exact steps mark as UNCONFIRMED and we'll take a look at it.

I'm not sure if I can add anything to description of the problem. I add 2 screenshots, how chart looks in Openoffice.org 2.4.2 (and earlier versions of Libreoffice) and Libreoffice 4.0.

Reproduction of this bug is extremely easy:
1. create chart in Libreoffice,
2. paste it into Libreoffice text document,
3. save document and close.
4. open document in earlier version of libreoffice or openoffice.org
5. double click on chart to edit it.

At this point X axis categories disappers.

6. Open the Chart data table (still in earlier version)

X axis categories column is empty.

That's it, 100 % reproducible on all installations in our office, containing different versions of Ubuntu Linux and Libreoffice 4.0 and Openoffice.org 2.4.2 to export documents to doc format.
