With the gamma setting changed (e.g. 'Xgamma 1.1' or using redshift), while watching a video fullscreen the system freezes with lines running vertically on the screen. I cannot switch TTY or use SysReq commands. I have not been able to find any logs. Running Kernel 3.15.5-2-ARCH, KDE 4.x, xf86-video-ati driver, on AMD Radeon HD 5770.
Please attach your xorg log and dmesg output. Also, to clarify does it only hang when a fullscreen video is playing or anytime you try and change the gamma? What application and API (Xv, VDPAU, GL, etc.) are you using to play the video?

Turns out it hangs even with the gamma unchanged. But it does happen while video is playing, usually full screen, but not always. I've noticed it happen within Chrome (Flash and HTML5 video), and VLC. I'm not sure which API either uses, how can I tell?
It seems like this issue has been resolved with an update to my system a few days ago. Now running xf86-video-ati 1:7.4.0-3, kernel 3.15.8-1-ARCH. I have tried several full screen videos over the last few days with no issues.
Never mind, got another freeze.
I believe this was actually hardware issue on my system. There is a lot of dust build up on my GPU heat sync, preventing it from getting properly cooled. As a workaround I've changed the kernel DPM settings, power_dpm_state = battery, and power_dpm_force_performance_level = "low" (at least until I get around to buying an air canister). I haven't had a crash in a week so far. Thanks guys.
