xorg.conf

Since my latest upgrade to Xorg 1.16.4 (2014-12-20) by Debian 7 my ATI Mobility Radeon HD 2700 card seems to be no more supported though an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 2300 is claimed to be supported. The X-server does no more start up with my current xorg.conf.

Does it work without xorg.conf?

Which version of Xorg were you using before?
Comment 4 Elmar Stellnberger 2015-05-18 09:18:35 UTC
Yes, it works without xorg.conf and without non-oss firmware. However no more with 1920x1200/24 bit; just with 1600x1200 which is considerably lower. With the proprietary firmware there are other problems (see: https://lists.debian.org/debian-kernel/2015/05/msg00208.html).
The old X-Server; well that one was from Debian oldstable, very likely xserver-xorg (1:7.7+3~deb7u1) (I can not tell with 100,00% certainity because I have already overwritten my old installation and my old installation media.).

The drivers definitely still support your card.

It looks like your xorg.conf stopped working for some reason most likely outside of the driver, so I'm reassigning this report to the X server for now.

But I really recommend running without xorg.conf if possible. If you need to customize something, it's probably better to start writing a minimal xorg.conf from scratch for that.
Comment 6 Elmar Stellnberger 2015-05-18 11:56:52 UTC
Unfortunately generating a minimal xorg.conf did not succceed; at last before I have installed the non-oss firmware (Bug 90475).
Comment 7 Alex Deucher 2015-05-18 13:55:53 UTC
Do you have radeon.modeset=0 or nomodeset set somewhere in your configuration?
Comment 8 Elmar Stellnberger 2015-05-18 15:40:19 UTC
No, it is a fresh new installation only with the xorg.conf from my last installation.

Xorg -configure doesn't generate a minimal xorg.conf, quite far from it actually. :) These days, the individual sections where one needs to make customizations are usually all that's needed.
Comment 10 Elmar Stellnberger 2015-05-20 11:26:50 UTC
newly filed bugs: Bug 90534, Bug 90535.

The hardware used to test this is no more available.
