gdb backtrace + info locals

If I enter Xorg -configure it creates a /root/xorg.conf.new. Immediately thereafter Xorg crashes trying to jump to NIL (0x0). If I try to run Xorg by the xorg.conf.new later on manually it does not start (no screens found) though my ATI Mobility Radeon HD 2700 card had been supported in the past.

tested with Xorg 1.16.4 2014-12-20.

Usually, one can start X without any xorg.conf file these days.
Comment 5 Elmar Stellnberger 2015-05-18 09:11:14 UTC
Yes, this is possible. However without proprietary firmware you will be restricted to 1600x1200. Somewhat too low for my taste as I was used to 1920x1200/24bit (regression). With the non-oss firmware on the other hand I did not succeeed to make the integrated LVDS work (see also https://lists.debian.org/debian-kernel/2015/05/msg00208.html).

That sounds like a kernel driver issue, not directly related to xorg.conf.
Comment 7 Elmar Stellnberger 2015-05-18 12:00:54 UTC
Should we move to bugzilla.kernel.org, then? I would also guess that we need two reports: one without the non-oss firmware (no more 1920x1200) and one with it (integrated display does not work).

Would be better to report it here against product DRI, component DRM/Radeon.

I suspect in the former case there might be no Radeon specific driver involved.

newly filed bugs: Bug 90534, Bug 90535.

XSegF: /var/log/messages (still an issue)

Problems on Xorg -configure still seem to be an issue as this test with the vesa driver on an XFX Radeon R5 230 card reveals.

I would believe that Xorg -configure is still an important issue even if you would normally split xorg.confs these days. Corresponding tools by individual distributions are (at least to my knowledge) no longer maintained or replaced by some general configuration.

Lots of bugs fixed in this area since 1.16. Please reopen if you still see this with 1.20.
