Description Evan Langlois 2015-07-11 05:59:39 UTC
Another weird one. At first I thought my distro messed up LyX since menus did not display. However, this is not the case. The menus do not display on the laptop's built-in screen. If I drag it over to the external HDMI screen, then the menus work fine!

Most of my apps are all Gnome/GTK based, but LyX is my one QT based app. If it starts on the laptop display, then the first time any particular menu is opened on the HDMI display, it will be at least the height of the monitor (with lots of blank space on the menu). The next time the menu opens, it will be displayed correctly. If I drag it back to the laptop display, the menus won't open, and dragging it to the HDMI again means I get super-tall menus the first time the menu opens.

I can only think this is a driver issue since its specific to a particular display output.

That seems rather unlikely to me. The driver isn't directly involved in what gets drawn where, it just draws what Xorg tells it to.

Which window manager are you using? Does this also happen with a different one?

Using default Gnome 3.16 setup. Nothing fancy. Just tried fluxbox and
problem went away. Now the window manager is just another X app. I fail
to see how it renders differently depending on which screen its in. Hmmm

Sounds like it's a gnome-shell/mutter issue then. Please file a report in the GNOME bugzilla.
