Description Sun Yongke 2015-10-26 14:10:19 UTC
client: mac osx 10.11
Quartz: 2.7.8

I connect to remote server by ssh -X remoteIP, the connection is correct.but the Quartz can not startup automatically. so the guy program can not run .

when I startup Quartz first,and use the command "ssh -x IP" in the Quartz's terminal. remote gui program can running correctly.

what's the problem?

there are some log:

$less /Users/syk/Library/Logs/X11/org.macosforge.xquartz.log

It works fine for me. What is the error message that you are seeing when you try?

after ssh connected, I run the command “gedit” and the output as follow:
$ gedit
No protocol specified

** (gedit:19991): WARNING **: Could not open X display

(gedit:19991): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display:

But, if I startup Xquartz first, run “ssh -X IP “ in the Quartz terminal. Everything is OK.

debug1: X11 forwarding requested but DISPLAY not set

It looks like you don't have $DISPLAY set. You've either unset DISPLAY or haven't logged out after your initial install of the XQuartz package.

See http://xquartz.macosforge.org/trac/wiki/X11-UsersFAQ#sshXforwardingdebugging

client:
   export DISPLAY=localhost:0.0

server: export DISPLAY=localhost:10.0

But the issue is still exists.
$  ssh -Y IP
Warning: No xauth data; using fake authentication data for X11 forwarding.

syk@cy-server:~$ export DISPLAY=localhost:10.0
syk@cy-server:~$ gedit
connect localhost port 6000: Connection refused

** (gedit:21288): WARNING **: Could not open X display
connect localhost port 6000: Connection refused
connect localhost port 6000: Connection refused
connect localhost port 6000: Connection refused

(gedit:21288): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display: localhost:10.0
syk@cy-server:~$ export DISPLAY=localhost:0.0

and I found a new method to start X11 in client, as follow:
 Xquartz & ssh -Y IP

Don't do this. Please read the FAQ I referenced above. If $DISPLAY isn't set in your environment, it's probably because you haven't logged out and back in. Please ask for help on the mailing list if you need assistance. There is no bug here.

Yep, the connection is refused, as it should be. Don't manage your DISPLAY environment variable unless you know what you're doing.
