I have a MAC OS Sierra 10.12.1 and downloaded Xquartz 2.7.11. IDL graphics was ok until I tried their DEMO program, which crashed. 

Then I tried ENVI (an IDL sister) and it would start up and die.

Both worked before ugrading Xquartz today.

I went back to a previous Xquartz (2.7.7) and everything works fine.

There's not enough information here to act on.  If you're using IDL remotely, you need to enable IGLX with:

  defaults write org.macosforge.xquartz.X11 enable_iglx -bool true
