X worked using nouveau, but text labels, on input fields and buttons were not correctly displayed. This was seen in the tabs in Konsole (KDE - bash shell) and  in firefox.
glxgears displayed in a very slow rate, and crashed X after a few seconds. I restarted KDE.
The remaining tests were in firefox:
incorrect displayed Labels sometimes had the label of a neighbouring (possibly the right only) button was displayed on top of a button's label, sometimes just colourful pixel noise was displayed instead of the label. Mouseover sometimes corrected the display of the label on a button, but could also cause it to become garbled again. 
Mouseover on a bottom-right taskbar item caused X to crash. I'm not sure which plugin it was. I have adblock and forecastfox in that region. 
finally I wanted to return to a normal display. I replaced the /etc/X11/xorg.conf, and tried to shut down KDE. This, however, again crashed X. I did not return to the console, but something strange was displayed: log messages were diplayed in a small green font, in two columns on the screen. Now my keyboard was no longer responding. On mouse actions, movement or click, messages were appended to both log columns simulateously. I used a cold reboot to restart my computer.
