Description Chris Rankin 2007-05-20 09:38:05 UTC
I have created a sample seom video file using the yukon package:

http://www.neopsis.com/projects/yukon/

When I play this file back on either my R100 or my rv280 based machines with XV_ALPHA_MODE=0, the video window turns blank until I hold down the <Alt><TAB> keys and highlight seom-player with the application-selector. Once I do this, playback continues normally.

With XV_ALPHA_MODE=1, the playback window is displayed correctly without any help.

My XOrg packages are from FC6, with git Mesa. Otherwise, my userspace environment is FC5.

I am experiencing a similar bug trying to play "Deus Ex" in OpenGL mode under Wine on my R100. The screen turns blank immediately here too, and stays blank until I hold down the <Alt><TAB> keys. However, in this case, the window freezes as soon as I release the <Alt><TAB> keys again. Also, setting XV_ALPHA_MODE has no effect.

Basically, it looks like "Deus Ex"'s OpenGL window is "locked" and cannot be updated unless I am pressing <Alt><TAB>. Does anyone have any idea what could be causing that, please?

OTOH, with XV_ALPHA_MODE=1, the xine video picture is always, always on the top, and all the pop-up menus are stuck underneath it. Oh well.

Are you still having issues with ati 6.7.19x or ati git master?

I'll let you know just as soon as I manage to upgrade to Fedora 8. Currently, my update process is hanging while trying to analyze package dependencies.

Yes, this problem still occurs with the Fedora 8 package:

xorg-x11-drv-ati-6.7.195-3.fc8

Are you running a composite manager? Changing XV_ALPHA_MODE just works around the problem by changing the way the overlay works. I suspect a bug in your video player.

I'm not using Beryl or Compiz, if that's what you're asking.

> I suspect a bug in your video player.

I certainly suspect a bug in *something*, yes. And it *might* be the video player. The player's source code is available here:

svn co svn://dbservice.com/big/svn/seom/trunk seom

Where does one set XV_ALPHA_MODE? I love to try if that makes a difference to a wine application that launches in fullscreen but displays nothing but black.

Use the gxvattr application.

Do you still have this issues with recent xf86-video-ati ?

Yes, exactly the same. (I'm assuming that seom-player is using Overlay rather than Textured video)

Mass closure: This bug has been untouched for more than six years, and is not
obviously still valid. Please reopen this bug or file a new report if you continue to experience issues with current releases.
