Description Ubiratan Pires Alberton 2007-08-07 09:22:26 UTC
I've run across this problem when reading a set of PDFs which make some use of layers and transparency in all three Poppler-based readers (Evince 0.8.3, xpdf 3.01, and kpdf 3.5.5), using Poppler 0.5.4. The problem can be clearly seen in the last page of the example PDF which will be attached shortly. The chapter title shouldn't display any gray rectangles, and the stylized dragon image should appear behind the text in a very light gray color, as opposed to completely black and blocking the text.

Both Adobe Reader 7.0.9 for Linux and Ghostview 3.6.2 render these "special effects" correctly. I'll also attach pictures of how it's supposed to look.

Since the sample file is 1.4MB in size, I'm posting a link to it. It's a free sample file from an electronic bookstore, so the link should be reliable. I can also attach the file if needed.

This is how the page looks in Evince

This shows the page in question as rendered (incorrectly) by Evince 0.8.3. The result is the same in xpdf-3.01 and kpdf-3.5.5.

This is how the page looks in Ghostview

This shows the page being rendered correctly by Ghostview 3.6.2 (the kghostview frontend was used in the picture, but the gv backend is the same).

Thanks for the bug report. It's a duplicated of bug #7856 which is already fixed in poppler cvs head.
