Description marco bernardi 2007-08-23 15:32:04 UTC
Hardware : Dell inspiron 640m, dual core, graphic card i945GM
OS : Fedora core 7 (dual boot : Windows Vista )
driver : i810

I cannot find a way to see TV in color... it works perfectly in blak and white...many attempts to modify xorg.conf but no success ...
In Windows TV-out works perfectly and I can see my movie colored.

I suppose a bug..

Regards, Marco - Turin - Italy

I can see color with TV-out (s-video) on i915GM with upstream driver. In fact xf86-video-intel >=2.0 driver should be fine.

Can you try "intel" driver shipped in Fedora 7, or upstream driver?
TV support doesn't require any specific setting in xorg.conf.
Comment 2 marco bernardi 2007-08-27 03:50:10 UTC
Hi Gordon,

I am already using driver intel in fedora core 7. Take care I am using a PAL TV.
and my xorg.conf has option

 Option "TVStandard" "PAL-B"

In any way:

I have recompiled the latest intel_drv.so
the new one is 2213725 bytes while the old one (supplied by fedora 7) is 292340 bytes.

Still no color on my TV, but.. something is not clear to me because in dmesg I see

[drm] Initialized drm 1.1.0 20060810
[drm] Initialized i915 1.6.0 20060119 on minor 0

and the file i915*_dri.so do not have date of august 27 2007 (like intel_drv.so)
(lug = july)

-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 2390952 9 lug 21:06 i915_dri.so
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 2382700 9 lug 21:06 i915tex_dri.so

May you kindly explain to me what I need to do in order to activate the new driver ?

Thank you,
Regards, Marco

Here are some additional info..

using i810 2.1.0 and I can see coloured TV...
but I need to modify manually xorg.conf for that

Bye, Marco

Comment 4 Gordon Jin 2007-08-27 18:30:47 UTC
So would you close this bug?
btw, what modification in xorg.conf resolves it? I don't think we need TVStandard option.
Comment 5 marco bernardi 2007-08-28 08:05:52 UTC
Using i810 2.1 (downloaded from fedora updates testing), in order to see both LCD and TV, I am using following parameters in section "Device"

Section "Device"
        Identifier "Videocard0"
        Driver "i810"
        Option "MonitorLayout" "TV,LFP"
        Option "Clone" "True"
EndSection

That do not work with intel_drv.so downloaded from intel site (and compiled on my Fedora 7)

I am not sure, but it seems that on my system, "intel_drv" cannot identify a correct configuration for "Modes" and "Depth" valid for TV color....

Bye, Marco
Comment 6 Gordon Jin 2007-08-28 20:40:50 UTC
"intel_drv.so downloaded from intel site"? I don't think Intel site directly provides driver download. Are you meaning downloading from freedesktop git?

When I use upstream driver for TV, I don't set specific options in xorg.conf. I use xrandr to change mode or other operations.

So do you think this bug could be closed?
Comment 7 marco bernardi 2007-08-29 04:22:16 UTC
Sorry,

I download driver using the command

git-clone git://anongit.freedesktop.org/git/xorg/driver/xf86-video-intel

starting from http://intellinuxgraphics.org/download.html and I confused the 2 links...

When you say Upstream driver, I suppose you intend intel_drv.so
Using that driver I cannot see my PAL TV in color
I have Updated the intel_drv using latest version (from freedesktop) but still I cannot see colors on my TV.
Now, I do not know if I am doing something wrong or the problem is generated by my Laptop + intel_drv.so

I will try to run some other tests in order to understand if intel_drv.so (upstream driver) will work ...

Regards, Marco

Comment 8 marco bernardi 2007-08-29 07:32:33 UTC
Here are some news

1) using i810 both 2.0 and 2.1 the TV works fine with color
2) using intel_drv.so , both version supplied by fedora 7 and version downloaded from "freedesktop" I cannot see TV with color

Checking in /var/log/Xorg.0.log, I can see that driver "intel" cannot found any acceptable mode for the TV: for any of the mode exist some problem ...

So I think this is a limitation of the driver and I suppose better to investigate about such behaviour.

How can I attach a file to this message ?
I think can be useful my Xorg.0.log ... I am copy-paste here !

I'm not familiar with fedora 7. Could you tell me what's the relationship (or difference) between the shipped "i810 2.0" and "intel_drv.so" provided by fedora 7?

btw, you should click "Create a New Attachment" for attaching next time.

Sorry about delay, I was on holidays for some days !

In fedora 7 there are 3 drivers for intel graphics chisets

1) i740 ...
2) i810 intel integrated graphics chipsets including i810,i815,....i945GM
3) experimental modesetting driver for intel integrated graphics chipsets (intel_drv.so)

using "modesetting" I cannot see color on my TV Pal

Regards, Marco

I expired a similar problem. I do not getting any colored output on tv with driver version 2.1.0 and 2.1.1. If i attach the tv at runtime, the screen flickers some time and gets blank again. But if I start the server with tv already attached, then the tv shows my desktop, but no colors.

I think this bug might be related:

Could you take a look at bug#12748 (specifically comment#1) to see if that makes you work too?

Sorry, i won't be able to try this the next days, but please leave the bug open. I'm going to test it next week.

Glad to know that. So I'm closing this one.
