Description Mads Kiilerich 2007-11-05 09:20:47 UTC
This is a follow-up to my comments on #12843. I created this "bug" to track the problems and progress I have.

Using xorg-x11-drv-radeonhd-0.0.2-0.14.20071031git.fc9 on F8 as suggested by Hans Ulrich Niedermann

Dell with RV516 ATI Radeon X1300 Pro, splitter cable, and a DELL E228WFP 1680x1050 display.

With radeonhd driver I can startx and get a picture, apparently 1680x1050, and with a bit flickering. Changing the resolution with ctrl-alt-plus/minus leads to more flickering and non-working resolutions.

BUT when I try to start a greeter the screen starts flashing. I have seen the greeter for up to 1 second, but right now it is only shown in short flashes. But when i ctrl-alt-backspace the flashing greeter I'm shown a non-flashing crash warning. So this is how far it works for me...

I will attach the Xorg.0.log's for these cases.

With the monitor connected to the wrong port I get the message "Failed to detect a connected monitor" followed by "Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.". That confuses me - I would assume that screen and monitor is the same in this context?

The message "RADEONHD: No matching Device section for instance (BusID PCI:1:0:1) found" is shown when starting X. I assume that 1:0:1 is what conntest calls 1:0.1? Shouldn't that be ignored by the driver?

I would start using and testing the radeonhd driver if it was as "good" as the vesa driver but at the full resolution (vesa can be used at 1280x1024 only).

For the record, this git commit ad599c4436c64b11d18c89da6a684f5241979a96.

Aha, there is some electrical control issue with TMDSA. Will look into this once i have a DMS59 -> DVI cable for my dell card (with broken fb ram)
Comment 5 Mads Kiilerich 2007-11-06 03:43:05 UTC
I have experienced that Vista (or the bios) occasionally sends the signal to the wrong output, so it sounds plausible that something isn't like it should be...

For the record, conntest output for the screen connected to the output marked "1", "2" and no screen.

Can I help testing something? Or measure what is connected and what isn't?

Have you arranged access to a splitter cable, or are you waiting for someone to send you one?
Comment 6 Mads Kiilerich 2007-11-06 04:55:37 UTC
now using xorg-x11-drv-radeonhd-0.0.2-0.15.20071105git.fc9 with e9c24f662860229440dc61ecbae22e7d7c74d442

I get the same flickering/flashing behaviour as before with digital output.

But given the hint that the problems was due to the digital splitter cable I tried with an analog splitter cable, and that works! So now I can use the card - and now I know why 2d acceleration is nice to have ;-)

Comment 7 Luc Verhaegen 2007-11-19 10:01:06 UTC
Should be fixed in a recent driver version. Have been able to test this with a DMS59->DVI-I connector.
Comment 8 Sinisa Dukanovic 2007-11-22 07:11:19 UTC
I'm having similar problems with the current HEAD. I also have a Dell-variant of an X1300 with the DMS59->DVI-I connector. But i have two monitors attached to the two DVI-I connectors of the DMS59->DVI-I connector. The primary monitor is constantly flickering and blanking form time to time. These faults occur pretty much randomly. The secondary montor has absolutely no problems. Everything is looking as it should be. I tried to set ForceReduced in the Device Section of my xorg.xonf, but that didn't change anything.

Here some additional data:

Comment 10 Luc Verhaegen 2007-11-22 07:32:38 UTC
I just pushed up a commit that should fix the flickering. A user on irc reported this a short while ago, and i was able to reproduce it now.

Get our latest git, pushed just minutes ago, and then it should hopefully be fixed.
Comment 11 Sinisa Dukanovic 2007-11-23 01:49:22 UTC
Works like a charm now.
Comment 12 Mads Kiilerich 2007-11-26 01:10:19 UTC
I can confirm that my Dell with RV516 X1300 pro and a splitter cable now works fine. Thanks!

Now I'm looking forward to 2D acceleration! ;-)
