when a pointer or mouse (or both? dunno) grab is attempted while the server is not in the foreground, the grab fails.

I just tried on a plain X server running xterm and a simple app that grabs pointer and keyboard. couldn't reproduce it though. 

Do you have a simple testcase?

bleh, you're right. seems to be fixed meanwhile - guess i should have checked before. :} otoh, it's now documented. :)
