Similar to bug #8158 adding fall-through run-mailcap support, I'd propose adding support to use perl MimeInfo (see http://search.cpan.org/dist/File-MimeInfo/). In particular, to use it's 'mimeopen' tool (http://search.cpan.org/dist/File-MimeInfo/mimeopen). Proposed patch forthcoming.

fyi mimeopen is not essential part of all systems. will you put it in requirements?
mimeopen is purely optional, ie will be used if present, else fall back to other "generic" mechanisms to open files.
ok to put it more general - do you intend to solve the generic fallback in in some non-firefox mode? either by some integrated mime mechanism or by adding some package requirements.
