if i try to setup a dual-head setup using xrandr, the external is always set to the same resolution as the internal panel.

xrandr --output VGA-0 --size 1280x1024

attached is the logfile snippet of one xrandr run (which had no result at all)

The xserver is enabling clone mode by default (both outputs being drive by the same crtc).  Take a look at the output of xrandr --verbose.

they try something like:
xrandr --output VGA-0 --crtc 1 --mode 1280x1024
