I tried to save the above link as foo.pdf, and it failed to render with poppler 0.8.3 for me as well.

BTW just noticed that 0.8.4 had been released but:
a) didn't see any freedesktop-ftp-release announce
b) wiki page for download claims 0.8.4 but points at 0.8.3

No idea what debian does wrong, but got lotsa similiar reports lately
