Description arvidb 2008-09-29 03:32:09 UTC

With this config X gets the modes right, but then dies with a sig11.

X refuses to set a PAL compatible mode on the VGA output, either by crashing or by saying "no usable screens found". See the attached xorg.conf and Xorg.0.log files.

(The logs were taken with a TFT monitor connected on the DVI output, in addition to the TV connected on the VGA output with a VGA->RGB Scart cable. Both monitors were turned on.)

Log of the "no_screens" config.
Comment 4 arvidb 2008-09-29 04:32:43 UTC
This bug is present in ati-6.9.0 as well as in ati-git as of 080929.
Comment 5 Alex Deucher 2008-09-29 06:37:22 UTC
Try the following option:
Option "Colortiling" "FALSE"
Comment 6 arvidb 2008-09-29 07:04:49 UTC
Using the first config (modes_ok-sig11) but with color tiling off, X starts. I get a black screen on my VGA connected TV, and a normal screen on my TFT monitor.

There seems to be a signal from the VGA connector that the TV is able to sync to, even if the picture is all black.

DISPLAY=:0.1 mplayer <video file> still gives no output on the TV screen.

(The "no screens" bug might not be related, so let's ignore that for now.)
Comment 7 arvidb 2008-09-29 08:19:39 UTC
With the TFT monitor disconnected I still only get a black picture on the TV. (I know the cable works; I can get a picture on my TV with a different source, and the TV syncs to the "black" signal from this computer.) I attach the log file from this scenario.

Only TV connected, still black screen.
Comment 9 arvidb 2008-09-30 06:43:23 UTC
It seems the black screen bug might be a duplicate of bug 12626 (https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=12626). Although the symptoms are a bit different, as with that bug some switching between modes with xrandr can produce a picture on the TV.

The original report of X crashing on specific modes when color tiling is enabled is still valid though.

Is this still an issue with xf86-video-ati from git master?

I have latest compiled xorg-sever, mesa, xf86-video-ati, drm from git to look at KMS progress. The Xorg.0.log shows that the (interlace mode not supported) - but it worked in before the git update.

Mass closure: This bug has been untouched for more than six years, and is not
obviously still valid. Please reopen this bug or file a new report if you continue to experience issues with current releases.
