gabble-log.txt

mcepl_: why cannot empathy connect to IRC channel through jabber2irc gateway? When I try to enter telepathy%irc.freenode.net MUC on ǐrc.ceplovi.cz, nickserv asks me for identify password, but then no new tab opens.
mcepl_: (I know, that empathy is multi-protocol, but I want to use the gateway because of server-side logging etc.)
mcepl_: strange thing is that with another ejabberd server and another IRC server it works correctly (identical ejabberd) and it does work without a glitch when using gajim instead of empathy.
Robot101: mcepl_: that's pretty weird... can you get a log?
[ ... couple of minutes later ...]
mcepl_> Robot101: gabble-log.txt -- look for kvm string
[ ... the log is attached ...]
Robot101: mcepl: oh!
Robot101: mcepl: oh dear its this :)
Robot101: mcepl: yeah, MUCs can change your name when you join the room
Robot101: that's what's happening here
Robot101: it confuses us :(
mcepl: should I file a bug?
Robot101: yeah I might take a look at it later :)
mcepl: component telepathy-gabble?
Robot101: yeah

This is hopefully fixed by Will's changes in telepathy-gabble 0.7.20.
Comment 2 Will Thompson 2009-03-26 10:57:42 UTC
Matěj, could you see if this is fixed with telepathy-gabble >=0.7.20? I'm pretty sure it should be.
Comment 3 Matej Cepl 2009-03-26 13:50:09 UTC
Unfortunately, none of my Jabber accounts get authorized in Empathy (although they work perfectly well with other clients and same passwords), so I cannot test it for you. Anyway, I rather use gajim anyway, because it is real XMPP client. Will try sometime later with empathy when I am actually able to login to my accounts.

Ouch. And thanks to our great¹ error reporting, you can't tell why they can't connect. As and when you get a chance, a bug with the debug output of Gabble failing to connect would be really helpful.

Sorry you've had such a bad experience of Gabble...

¹ n.b. may not be great :(

Matej,

There is a patch available for the bug that was preventing you from connecting. Perhaps you could try to reproduce this bug now?
Comment 7 Matej Cepl 2009-09-22 12:20:26 UTC
Yes, it has been fixed, and Empathy as whole seems much better ... I would almost be willing to say (with a little bribery) that it is usable :).
