Description Evertjan Garretsen 2009-01-11 07:24:26 UTC
Please see bug report at launchpad:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-radeonhd/+bug/311748

The specs:
Asus x56tr Notebook
AMD TURION X2 64
ATI 3200 & ATI HD3470Ma
RAM 4GB (now reduced to 2MB physically)

I can install Intrepid Ibex, but my graphics cards don't work in Intrepid.

Installing Ubuntu only works with the extra boot options acpi=off or MAXCPUS=1. Ubuntu Intrepid installed, but i couldn't get any GUI. The x-server tried to start but failed. I also cannot switch to terminal using crtl-alt F1, because X keeps trying. sometimes i get the errormessage: no screens found. I tried ati, radeon, vesa, radeonhd. I tried installing the official ati-drivers. Nothing worked, then after hours of mindbreaking i installed Hardy Heron, IT worked! Installed the restricted drivers and the screen looks nice.

At the moment i'm using Mandriva linux, which at the first boot could start the xserver, but then a text based troubleshoot appeared and using this i was able to get Mandriva running. Please see the link i provide for several xorg.o.log files and xorg.conf files from both Mandriva and ubuntu intrepid / Jaunty.

I can see a bunch of log files on the said page - none for radeonhd.
Please set up the use of radeonhd and provide a log file. It'd be good to have a verbose log file which you can get with:
X -logverbose 7
from the console. (You will have to kill X with ctrl-alt-backspace).

Xorg.0.log on jaunty driver radeonhd from console using option logverbose 7

When starting X from console using driver radeonhd, i get the error message "no screens found" when starting up ubuntu "normally" i get a green horizontal line over the ubuntu logo from startup.

By the way: i cannot kill X using ctrl-alt-backspace, when using radeonhd. X fails to respond to this command. i can only reboot pc using recovery mode, to get console access.

This has nothing to do with radeonhd. Ctrl-alt-backspace can no more restart X in Jaunty.

I thought one of the suits at ATI wanted (demanded) that. What's the
terminal command to restart X? Does that still work?

Xorg.0.log using radeonhd driver on a clean Intrepid install

I've added the correct Xorg.0.log and xorg.conf. supposed in the launchpad thread. See the launchpad thread for more info. I did a fresh install on a formatted partition, i only installed intrepid and after that added driver radeonhd by using apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-radeonhd. Hope this helps to determine the cause of the problems.

Please look at the following link:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-radeonhd/+bug/311748

Here is stated what i've done sofar to get my display working.
Comment 12 Bryce Harrington 2009-01-30 16:40:26 UTC
sysrq+alt+k (if your keyboard/kernel supports it) should also work in most cases to restart X (even if it's locked up hard).
Comment 13 Jeremy Huddleston Sequoia 2011-10-16 15:57:11 UTC
Does this issue occur with the preferred ati driver (xf86-vide-ati)? If so, please move this to the Driver/Radeon component.

Development of radeonhd has pretty much halted and development focus is on the ati driver. Please see http://www.x.org/wiki/radeonhd

If the issue does not exist in the ati driver (or if there is no response to this message), this bug will be closed as WONTFIX unless someone contributes a patch.
Comment 14 Jeremy Huddleston Sequoia 2011-11-07 15:07:36 UTC
Closing due to lack of response. Please reopen and move to the Driver/Radeon
component if this issue persists with xf86-video-ati
