Description Stanislav Brabec 2009-02-18 06:19:30 UTC
I re-read the discussion from http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/xdg/2008-April/009420.html

As the solution does not exist yet, I would like to propose two new Additional categories:

Spirituality: It should cover suggestions like Religion, Religious, Religiosity, Faith, Confidence, Spirit, Spiritual, Ritual, Ministry (Science; Education; Game; maybe Utility, maybe Research {bug 20186})

Philosophy: Secular counterpart of Theology and Spirituality. (Science; Education, maybe Research {bug 20186})

If this bug is going to incorporate Bug 34783
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=34783
Then it should be modified to include the category
Philosophy/Astrology.

There are an huge number of windows astrology programs out there but most of them have not been ported or packaged for linux. There should be a Category for them.

Since this bug hasn't seen any activity in over a year, maybe this comment will be a reminder about it. I had this issue while trying to categorize some software recently. The best I could do was put the app under "Education". Most of the applications which call for a "Religion" category are simple utilities which remind the user to pray at certain hours, scripture study tools for the Bible or Qur'an, prayer books, hymn books, prayer tools, devotionals, educational texts, or research tools. As for astrology, I suppose some people might categorize this with religion, games, simple amusement or entertainment, or even science.

Perhaps some ideas that might work:
Religion; Religion;Education; or Education;Religion; Education;Philosophy; Religion;Astrology; or Games;Astrology; maybe even Utility;Religion; or Utility;Astrology; depending on the purpose of the specific program.

Anyway, the whole discussion - and the reason for the delay - seems to be a disagreement over semantics. I think "Religion" is about the broadest term that could be used unless it were to be called "Humanities" which could be an especially broad term covering religion, philosophy, or social sciences. In the end, it has to be called *something*.

To the comment 3: As far as I remember the discussion, Spirituality was a good consensus. Religion is a subset of human spirituality, and such category would not cover non-religious software regarding human spirituality.

Yes, Humanities could be a broader term than Philosophy, as it covers for example psychology as well.

But I guess that primary goal for proposing Spirituality was separating of religious and scientific applications. That is why I think we should have both Spirituality and Humanities in parallel.

This bug more probably waits for Vincent's time to review all pending spec bugs.
