oops forgot some stuff. Distro: gentoo Display: lvds server version: xorg-server-1.5.3-r5 mesa: 7.4 libdrm: 2.4.5 I cannot get a gdb bug trace, i tried the methods listed in your wiki here: http://www.x.org/wiki/Development/Documentation/ServerDebugging but the server dies before it can attach resulting in it erroring out.
Can you try starting w/o an xorg.conf (just rename it or something)? Also, to get a backtrace you could start the server under gdb instead of trying to attach to it after start, or add a "sleep(3);" somewhere to xf86-video-intel's preinit function to give you time to attach.

Something like: # gdb /usr/bin/Xorg ... (gdb) run -verbose should start up the server and land you back in gdb when it exits or crashes.

Sounds like you built against a libdrm with mode setting support, but aren't running against it, since drmCheckModesettingSupported is in libdrm.
(In reply to comment #8) > Sounds like you built against a libdrm with mode setting support, but aren't > running against it, since drmCheckModesettingSupported is in libdrm. > yea kernel 2.6.29 has it but my wireless driver doesn't work on 2.6.29 at the moment so i am stuck on 2.6.28, it loads but refuses to talk to my router which it did on the standard ralink drivers before they were put in the kernel. the libdrm i have is marked stable on gentoo and was pulled in with the rest of xorg-server 1.5.3 when that was marked stable.
Could you try rebuilding your intel driver? What Jesse is saying is that you may have built it against a different version of libdrm than you currently have installed.
thats the thing. every time i have to work on debugging this i compile the latest stable driver in the portage tree 2.6.3-r1 to get the information and then when i am done i rebuild the 2.5.1-r1. ----- Corescale kevin # genlop xf86-video-intel * x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel Sun Oct 26 19:27:35 2008 >>> x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel-2.1.1 Fri Mar 13 16:36:17 2009 >>> x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel-2.6.3 Sat Mar 14 08:31:42 2009 >>> x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel-2.6.3 Sat Mar 14 13:24:41 2009 >>> x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel-2.6.1 Sat Mar 14 17:25:02 2009 >>> x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel-2.6.3 Sat Mar 14 17:30:19 2009 >>> x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel-2.6.3 Sat Mar 14 22:25:35 2009 >>> x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel-2.4.3 Sat Mar 14 22:36:48 2009 >>> x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel-2.5.1-r1 Sun Mar 15 10:21:38 2009 >>> x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel-2.6.3 Sun Mar 15 10:43:48 2009 >>> x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel-9999 Sun Mar 15 18:32:38 2009 >>> x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel-2.5.1-r1 Sun Mar 29 04:36:35 2009 >>> x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel-2.5.1-r1 Sun Mar 29 15:14:28 2009 >>> x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel-2.6.1 Sun Mar 29 17:29:23 2009 >>> x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel-2.5.1-r1 Mon Apr 6 07:18:53 2009 >>> x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel-2.6.3-r1 Mon Apr 6 07:54:03 2009 >>> x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel-2.6.3-r1 Mon Apr 6 08:22:31 2009 >>> x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel-2.6.3-r1 Mon Apr 6 08:38:01 2009 >>> x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel-2.6.3 Mon Apr 6 08:49:55 2009 >>> x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel-2.6.1 Mon Apr 6 09:01:28 2009 >>> x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel-2.5.1-r1 Mon Apr 6 12:14:13 2009 >>> x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel-2.6.3-r1 Mon Apr 6 12:38:22 2009 >>> x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel-2.5.1-r1 Tue Apr 7 05:11:29 2009 >>> x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel-2.6.3-r1 Tue Apr 7 05:43:03 2009 >>> x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel-2.5.1-r1 Sun Apr 12 16:47:55 2009 >>> x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel-2.6.3-r1 Sun Apr 12 17:04:03 2009 >>> x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel-2.5.1-r1 Mon Apr 13 14:49:09 2009 >>> x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel-2.6.3-r1 Mon Apr 13 15:18:35 2009 >>> x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel-2.5.1-r1

I recompiled libdrm, xorg-server, and all my drivers and it's still doing it.
Meh, sorry for the bug spam.
Can you attach a more recent X log (be sure to set its mime type to text/plain)? The first log looks like maybe libpciaccess is hanging, while the second looks like a libdrm or LD_LIBRARY_PATH problem. I'm pretty sure other Gentoo users have working configs with this chipset, so I'm still suspecting a config issue here...
Marking as NOTOURBUG on Rémi's advice since this sounds like this should be filed at Gentoo's bugzilla.
