xorg config file

Any Intel driver above xf86-video-intel-2.5.1-r1 will cause Xorg to die while it is starting up leaving a blank useless screen with a unresponsive keyboard and no mouse. The only way to recover is to either have a ssh on before hand and reinstalling a working driver before restarting or hard reboot.

I cannot get a gdb bug trace, i tried the methods listed in your wiki here:
http://www.x.org/wiki/Development/Documentation/ServerDebugging

but the server dies before it can attach resulting in it erroring out.
Comment 3 Jesse Barnes 2009-04-13 10:08:21 UTC
Can you try starting w/o an xorg.conf (just rename it or something)?

Also, to get a backtrace you could start the server under gdb instead of trying to attach to it after start, or add a "sleep(3);" somewhere to xf86-video-intel's preinit function to give you time to attach.

i am not familiar with gdb, how do you start a program from within it?
Comment 5 Jesse Barnes 2009-04-13 10:43:40 UTC
Something like:
  # gdb /usr/bin/Xorg
  ...
  (gdb) run -verbose
should start up the server and land you back in gdb when it exits or crashes.

dmesg without xorg conf.
Comment 7 kevin kaploe 2009-04-13 13:28:08 UTC
i tried it without the xorg.conf and end with the same result.

this is what i get when running the debuger.

Sounds like you built against a libdrm with mode setting support, but aren't running against it, since drmCheckModesettingSupported is in libdrm.

yea kernel 2.6.29 has it but my wireless driver doesn't work on 2.6.29 at the moment so i am stuck on 2.6.28, it loads but refuses to talk to my router which it did on the standard ralink drivers before they were put in the kernel.

the libdrm i have is marked stable on gentoo and was pulled in with the rest of xorg-server 1.5.3 when that was marked stable.

Could you try rebuilding your intel driver? What Jesse is saying is that you may have built it against a different version of libdrm than you currently have installed.
Comment 11 kevin kaploe 2009-04-13 20:09:40 UTC
thats the thing. every time i have to work on debugging this i compile the latest stable driver in the portage tree 2.6.3-r1 to get the information and then when i am done i rebuild the 2.5.1-r1.

I recompiled libdrm, xorg-server, and all my drivers and it's still doing it.
Comment 14 Rémi Cardona 2009-04-19 03:53:00 UTC
Meh, sorry for the bug spam.
Comment 15 Jesse Barnes 2009-05-04 10:04:25 UTC
Can you attach a more recent X log (be sure to set its mime type to text/plain)? The first log looks like maybe libpciaccess is hanging, while the second looks like a libdrm or LD_LIBRARY_PATH problem. I'm pretty sure other Gentoo users have working configs with this chipset, so I'm still suspecting a config issue here...
Comment 16 Jesse Barnes 2009-05-04 10:14:22 UTC
Marking as NOTOURBUG on Rémi's advice since this sounds like this should be filed at Gentoo's bugzilla.
