I had to turn off modeset because of other problems. When I did, random icons in the KDE 4 system tray kept getting corrupted. I set

Option "AccelMethod" "XAA"

which resulted in the messages

(II) RADEON(0): XAA Render acceleration unsupported on Radeon 9500/9700 and newer. Please use EXA instead.
(II) RADEON(0): Render acceleration disabled

and this worked around the bug.

This occurred because DRI was disabled, because my Virtual was too big. I set my Virtual to the same resolution as the physical screen, and now DRI works and the system tray displays correctly.

Changed bug summary accordingly.
