On XMPP, when you join a room the server sends you a little bit of scrollback. It turns out that it's possible to control how much you receive, as specified at <http://xmpp.org/extensions/xep-0045.html#enter-managehistory>.

Perhaps we want an interface for this in the spec? It's pretty XMPP-specific. I suppose in theory an IRC bouncer might support doing this kind of thing...
