I opened a couple of poppler source files out of curiosity and noticed more than
one structure that afaics can be marked as const (e.g. tables)... running
objdump -x on libpoppler.so seems to turn out quite a bit of stuff that ends up
in .data and if marked const approproately could go in .rodata and shared by all
the users of libpoppler

This is a wish i agree that would be nice but probably will never do to mantain 
as much possible compatibility with xpdf source.

Can you check if that still happens? If so a patch or at least saying which things you would constify is more than welcome.
