Description sionii 2012-11-02 20:29:06 UTC
When using the spreadsheet module clicking on file/recent documents lists the last 10 documents opened in the LO suite. This is inconvenient when looking for a specific spreadsheet which pre-dates the 10 listed documents especially if they are relevant to another module such as the word processor. Change this feature so that it displays the 10 most recent documents opened in the current module as first preference; a second preference could be made available to list documents from all modules.

Thanks for reporting this enhancement! I can't find any duplicate, therefore I mark this as NEW.

Kind regards,
Joren

Looks like a duplicate of bug 42295.

indeed, but that bug is closed due a not-responding reporter I guess. This is now an enhancement request :-). Thanks for hunting! (I'll place it in the 'See also' field)

This could be implemented as part of Recently Used Files list enhancement in bug 61174, point 3.

While originally submitted against calc - spreadsheet. This enhancement is more appropriate against entire suite, especially with other bugs (bug 48960, bug 49680, etc.) being closed as duplicates of it. Adjusting component to UI.

Also, would suggest an importance of this enhancement as High, but I'll let another reviewer make that adjustment.

Hi :)

Read my comment here
  https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=67158#c1

" It is an essential part of LibreOffice that the modules work integrated. I.e.: one does not have to start Calc in order to start or open a spreadsheet: you can do that while working in any file.
In the same line, users will expect that they may open recent Writer documents, while working in Calc. Etc.
So I think this intentional behaviour really will not be changed. "

Most people I've seen workin gwith OO and LibreOffice (and that are a lot) see this as an advantage over other office software.

So as an option.... fine.
Longer list recent documents. Good.
Or more ideas to tweak the list: excellent too.

Ah well...

How about give the user the choice of how they wish to see rencent items? Is not the the real goal of open source software, to give power to users and not someone remote that had differing priorities?

Sound OK to me.

Ah yes, one more option. No problem for me ;)

The goal is to give users to power help to change/improve the sofware, not just to ask others to do it :)
Note that the issue already is set as an enhancement. Anyone willing to work on implemention is more then welcome. When needed, other devs are always willing to give a little help.

I strongly disagree, to the point that me (and especially my wife! She gets VERY annoyed!) would stop using LibreOffice. (and revert back to Office 97!)
The reason: because we generally use ONE program at a time. Generally Spreadsheet OR Word, rarely both! Very annoying to open Excel/ Calc and click "open" and find no excel documents in the list (only Writer/ doc files)!! :( THIS IS VERY bad, for me!

So a fix for this would be to have several types of (optional) recent docs displayed in a pull down menu.
E.g. Recent Calc; Recent Writer (.doc), etc.

Maybe these (if required) could be enabled/ disabled under the preference/ options setting.

I honestly have been looking for this since open office days and I am still waiting.... please....

@mick: thanks for the clear explanation.
Pls look at File > New .. It's one office suite, not a splitted one.
Regards,
Cor
Comment 18 Cor Nouws 2013-09-24 14:57:10 UTC
hmm apologies. Maybe I was too fast. Mixing up two things
 - option to have File > Recent used documents work per module
 (OK)
 - wish to split LibreOffice in separate programs
 (Not OK)
Comment 19 V Stuart Foote 2013-09-24 16:41:54 UTC
@Cor--correct this enhancement remains valid.

The number of bugs filed requesting similar enhancement suggests it remains a high value requirement for numerous users.

bug 42295
bug 48960
bug 49680
bug 59058
bug 62359

I could see consolidating under bug 61174, otherwise retain.

Additionally, 2013 GSOC work on Start Center (see bug 64088 and https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Development/Gsoc/Ideas#Use_Widget_Layout_for_the_Start_Center ), as well as work for Windows OS 7+ integration-- bug 35785 -- have very substantive changes to the UX of MRU implemented in master targeted for LO 4.2.0

Users will need an opportunity to work with those enhancements and see if we've hit the mark.

Stuart
