Minimal example to reproduce bug

Caveat: this is hard to explain. Please try steps to reproduce or attached sample file. I think this might be similar to bug 51748.

It seems that if you put a reference to a cell in one sheet in a cell on another sheet then other cells around also become mysteriously linked. However you cannot see these links in the content of the cells, but they behave like they are linked. 

It's hard to explain but it's a nightmare because you end up corrupting your whole file and by the time you realise what's happened you've overwritten lots of cells on different sheets. I cannot use an application with this behaviour as I cannot trust it not to lose my work.

Steps to reproduce (the values below are arbitrary):

* Create new spreadsheet
* Enter value 50 in Sheet1.A1
* Enter value 60 in Sheet2.A1
* Enter "=Sheet2.A1" in Sheet1.A2
* Enter value "ss" in Sheet2.B1
* Change back to Sheet1 and you'll find that the value "ss" has been copied to Sheet1.B1. Why?!

I can not reproduce this issue.

But this is intended if you have both sheets selected.

In LibreOffice Calc, you can insert values, text or formulas that are simultaneously copied to other selected sheets of your document.
Select all desired sheets by holding down the Ctrl key and clicking the corresponding register tabs that are still gray at the bottom margin of the workspace. All selected register tabs are now white.
You can use Shift+Ctrl+Page Up or Page Down to select multiple sheets using the keyboard.
Now when you insert values, text or formulas into the active sheet, they will also appear in the identical positions in the other selected sheets. For example, data entered in cell A1 of the active sheet is automatically entered into cell A1 of any other seleted sheet.

Many thanks mariosv for your swift reply - you were absolutely right. This is not a bug at all but my mistake.

I have been using Google Docs Spreadsheets and the shortcut for changing sheets in that app is Ctrl+Shift+PgUp/Down. I had been using this shortcut in LibreOffice as well and not realising the effect.

Now that I know what's going on I will say that is difficult to notice (on my display at least) that I have several sheets selected at once. The difference between the white and the grey is not great - it's at the bottom of the screen and not where my eyes are looking when I make the mistake.

If you are finding many other users making the same mistake as me I would suggest making it more obvious, perhaps by changing the cursor box to indicate something special is going on when entering data into multiple sheets at once.

Sorry - didn't mean to do that - just trying to change type of attachment so it opens (which it does now).

I have tried this and by selecting two sheets I can see that it is very easy to inadvertently edit data in multiple sheets and that it would be better if this were more obvious.

Tested in 4.0 beta 2 on windows XP.

on tab color, would be nice to change tab contrast universally in settings rather than in each file and tab individually.

As a work around, I would set all my tabs with colours using Tab Colours.
Tabs with colours are more obvious when they are selected for editing.
