Description Daniel Hulse 2014-04-16 08:08:47 UTC
Selecting the page style in the status bar only works on left click, while language selection and selection type work with both right and click. In order to be consistent, the page style selection should be accessible on left click also.
Comment 1 Stefan Knorr (astron) 2014-04-17 14:18:41 UTC
This seems like a completely controversy-free consistency change. Changing component from ux-advise to Writer and removing the ux-advise list from CC. Setting status to New.

Isn't this going to interfer with the behaviour that double click opens the Format dialog for the page style ?
Comment 3 Daniel Hulse 2014-04-19 09:14:20 UTC
Now that's very interesting. I did not notice that double clicking the status bar in certain areas will open related dialogues. Why not change that behavior to single-click?

The GNOME HIG does have some things to say about this: https://developer.gnome.org/hig-book/stable/controls-status-bars.html.en
It seems opening things on double click is (was?) a standard method for opening things from the status bar, provided the section to be clicked was inlaid such that it was discoverable. Recently, however, they've changed how status bars work in gedit to open a popover on a single click, which may be reflected in the new HIG if/whenever it comes out.

In any case, the status bar's current behavior of doing some things on a right click, others on a single click, and others on a double click is inconsistent with itself and human interface guidelines and deserves a rework.

Gedit's status bar implementation

It might help in general to get an overview of existing design and ideas behind that. I know there was something from Regina Henschel iirc on the wiki on status bars, but can't find it now.
@regina ? thanks!

For Writer I only know the German article http://www.ooowiki.de/StatusLeiste.html, which is about OOo2. It was not by me, but I cannot lookup the main author.

You should find the information in the section "Status bar" in chapter 1 of the Writer Guide. https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/images/f/ff/WG4201-IntroducingWriter.pdf

+1. This is also what Office (2010/2013) does (and its status bar’s clickable areas react on mouse hover to indicate they open a related dialog). This is something I’d like to see in LibreOffice, as it’s much more user friendly.

Looks OK to me.
Would it be an idea to look at the whole statusbar (thanks for the pointers Regina) before setting of?
