Created attachment 101599 [details] DOC (identic) documents created with: LibreOffice 4.0.5, Word for Windows 2003and Pages 5.0.1. DOC document created with Libre shows incorrect font when opened in Word for Mac 2011, others not. When opening a DOC document, created in Libre/Open/Neo Office, in MS Office for Mac 2011 version 14.3.6 and above I noticed that Word for Mac does not retain appropriate font defined in Normal style of that document. All the text that formatting is based on styles is shown in Times New Roman 10pt font although font of Normal style is in Libre Office originally defined as e.g. Arial 11pt. As I encountered this is happening with all documents that were last edited and stored with OpenOffice/LibreOffice (any version) in .DOC format. It also seems that documents stored in .DOCX format from Libre/Open Office does not show such issues in Word for Mac 2011. Steps to reproduce: 1. Create ne Writer document 2. Set Default Style font and size to something different from Times New Roman and 10pt. 3. Write some text into document based on Normal style. 4. Save document to DOC (not DOCX) format. 5. Open this DOC document in Word for Mac 2011 ver. 14.3.6 or above. Current behavior: All text based on styles (and not formatted directly) in document, opened in Word for Mac, has font set to Times New Roman 10pt. Expected behavior: All text fonts and sizes in document, opened in Word for Mac, should be the same as those originally set in Libre/Open office. It look like the the described problem currently appears only in Word for Mac 2011 versions 14.3.6 and above (including most resent version). There is no problem with presented fonts if opening such DOC document in other word processors, including Word for Windows, Libre/Open Office, Pages, Apple TextEdit, ... But if equivalent DOC document is created eg. with Word for Windows or Word for Mac, Pages, Apple TextEdit, ... then Word for Mac does not have any problems with fonts when showing a DOC document. The same is true if document created in Libre/Open Office is opened eg. in Word for Windows or Pages and then just saved again to DOC format. I assume there was some change in Word for Mac 2011 in update 14.3.6 an above that leads to such behavior. I already reported this problem to Microsoft Community - see post http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/mac/forum/macoffice2011-macword/word-for-mac-2011-does-not-use-appropreate-font/0268fc2a-0dba-487b-a0a8-4092a9072047?page=1&tm=1403348367042. But I also assume that there is probably some minor inconsistency when saving to DOC format in Libre/Open Office as mentioned problem appears only and only if DOC document is saved with Libre/Open Office! Operating System: Mac OS X Version: 4.3.0.1 rc
This is likely a Mac only issue, so i'm passing it on to our Mac team.
Hi all, thanks for the report. I can confirm your finding. Open LO 4.3RC1 write some text in default style (have default style set to another font that Times New Roman). Save as .doc file. Open with Word 2011 on OSX -> Text appears in Times New Roman. Confirmed for a new doc and for the docs provided by user. I'm not an expert about font usage, so maybe if Word's default font is indeed Times New Roman this could be expected behavior? Not sure. Will need some dev input on this. Setting to NEW, since confirmed. Platform OSX.
I must highlight that currently this issue affects Mac users using Word for Mac 2011 only, but such issue can affect also future versions of Word for Windows if Microsoft makes some changes in loading DOC format as they made in Word for Mac. I have to mention that this issue appeared in Word for Mac update 14.3.6 (approx. november 2013). There was no problem regarding font issue in Word for Mac ver. 14.3.5 or below. I also think this is not Mac only issue. Yes, it currently affects Word for Mac users only, but DOC documents that affects those users are created in any platform (Win, Mac or Linux) using word processor that derives from Open Office. Any DOC document created with older versions of OpenOffice affects those Word for Mac users. I tested e.g. older OpenOffice 3.1.1 for Windows and the same issue appears, so it could probably be some old "bug" or minor inconsistency in OpenOffice DOC export engine.
Mitja, thanks for this additional information. Should be most helpful once the right person with needed insight is on this.
