Description Robinson Tryon (qubit) 2014-12-27 07:02:27 UTC
Whenever we save or export into a format other than ODF, we risk losing information.

This tracking bug helps to collect all of the bugs that pertain to compatibility between file formats, including limitations that prevent a converted file to maintain fidelity to the original.

Hi Robinson,

So you collect both limitations and bugs (& not yet implemented elements) on import and export..

Would it be handy to split for various file types and formats?

My intention is to focus on hard limitations. Anything that we could implement (but haven't gotten around to yet) would not be included.

Possibly. I'm not sure of the magnitude of these limitations. Perhaps there are only a handful of points that affect real users between, say, ODS and XLSX, or perhaps there are hundreds!

Starting to categorize/document these limitations seems like a helpful approach. Example use case: When someone says "What information might I lose if I save this spreadsheet as XLS?", we can just point them to a list.

I would suggest to at least start with three separate issues for text, spreadsheet, presentation.

Hi Robinson, *,

For convenience of the ones in cc, it would be lovely if at the same time as
adding an issue number, as comment could be given:
"Ad bug XXXX: xxxx xxxx xxxx xxx"
(Basically I copy paste the summary line)
Thanks,

Yep, let's go with one bug for each of the primary formats we'll deal with:
- Bug 88171 - [Meta] Tracking bug for limitations of binary DOC format
- Bug 88173 - [Meta] Tracking bug for limitations of DOCX (OOXML) format

- Bug 88174 - [Meta] Tracking bug for limitations of binary XLS format
- Bug 88175 - [Meta] Tracking bug for limitations of XLSX (OOXML) format

- Bug 88176 - [Meta] Tracking bug for limitations of binary PPT format
- Bug 88177 - [Meta] Tracking bug for limitations of PPTX (OOXML) format
